And It’s Contagious…

Contagious“And it’s contagious
And it’s contagious
And it’s contagious…”

He was animated as he spoke, telling us of the Asian man writhing and spitting on the floor. Saying how in helping he forgot to ask if anyone had been to China recently. He is Leo – the fire fighter, the medic.

“Don’t worry”, he says, telling us that the man’s son had been quarantined for 22 days in China before flying back two days ago.  Hmmm…

“And you came here.” She said it as fact, not a question.  Standing, looking at her immunocompromised father, imagining the worst case scenario, thinking of what surfaces her neighbor had touched. Realizing how easy it was to buy into the fear. She is the me that holds fear deep down for myself, for my children, for my family, for the world.

It is easy to find fear, to let it bubble up, to buy into the terrified mindset of the media. COVID-19 will kill you if you let it. The mind has power to make us ill too.

“We’re living in a den of thieves
Rummaging for answers in the pages
We’re living in a den of thieves
And it’s contagious
And it’s contagious
And it’s contagious
And it’s contagious…”

I already had influenza this year, despite the flu shot. Despite the hand washing. Despite the fact I don’t leave my home much and when I do I try not to touch. Admittedly I am a bit of a germaphobe. I’ve had N-95 masks in my house for at least a decade. Along with water, food, medical supplies and the ability to go full hermit without looking back.

I have to remember that conditions are different in my world. I have to remember that America is not China. Conditions are different here. Will COVID-19 kill me? Maybe. Will it directly impact my family? Probably – if not with illness, with the way the rest of the world that we rely on for certain things is behaving.

Is this coronavirus the end of the world? Unlikely, but if so I would much rather connect with my neighbor talking about saving lives, or listen to Regina Spektor sing than embrace fear for another moment. I choose awareness over fear.

“And it’s contagious
And it’s contagious
And it’s contagious
And it’s contagious…”

Instead of turning on another fearmongering news channel, check out what Kristen Russell choreographed to Spektor’s Contagious.
